Loy Krathong

The full moon night of November is "Loy Krathong Day". This is celebrated on the full moon in November. The word loy means to float, and a krathong is a banana leaf cup. People place a candle and incense sticks in their krathongs and then float them on a local river or pond.  The leaf cup is used to hold something. Loy Krathong is, therefore, the floating of lights in a leaf cup. During October and November, all the rivers and canals in the lowlands are flooded and the waters in some places overflow their banks.

Where to Celebrate Loy Kratong
Loy Kratong is celebrated throughout Thailand. In Bangkok, most people flock to the banks of the Chao Phraya river to float their kratongs, although large restaurants with ponds are also popular. Note that these restaurants as well as those on the banks of the river, are often fully booked weeks in advance. You should be sure to make reservations well in advance if you want to celebrate Loy Kratong at these places.

Loy Kratong in Chiang Mai has the added feature of a parallel festival called Yi Peng. Yi Peng is celebrated by launching hot air balloons made of rice paper into the night sky. The night sky is literally filled with thousands of these bright lights shining like a moving river of stars. It's a truly magical sight that can't really be captured in a picture.

How to get Full Moon Party , Koh Phangan

TRAIN There is an efficient train service from Bangkok to the South of Thailand (southern line). The overnight sleeper trains are the best way to go. Songkran Festival

Thailand's most celebrated festival is the Songkran Festival. It starts April 13 and lasts between 3 and 10 days, depending on where you are in Thailand. The word Songkran is from the Sanskrit meaning the beginning of a new Solar Year, but nowadays Thailand celebrates the New Year on 31 December.

The Thai people celebrate this festival with water. Everyone gets soaking wet and since it is the hottest season of the year, the custom is quite refreshing. Songkran is a Public Spring Cleaning Day, supported by the religious belief that anything old and useless must be thrown away or it will bring bad luck to the owner.

In Chiangmai, the Songkran procession is held on this day. This is a parade through Chiangmai comprised of Buddha images and attendants on floats, which are accompanied by minstrels and the town's people. The procession begins at Nawarat Bridge on the Mae Ping River and moves the Thapae Gate before approaching its final destination of Wat Prasingh.

In Bangkok,  Khao San Road is most popular for Thai and foreigners. This place will provide water , flour , water gun and more. Songkran Festival has the period 13-16 april each year. Chiang Mai Airport

Similan Island National Park

Similan Island National Park has been rated first by the U. S. publication Skin Diving of the top ten dive sites in the world. The Similan Islands in the heart of the Andaman Sea are indeed unparelled in their exotic beauty. from Bangkok to Suratthani Another way to travel is the night train from Hua Lamphong, the Bangkok Railway Station to Suratthani. The sleeping cars are more comfortable to take a ride in this long-hour journey. It is a little bit more expensive than the bus, but you will enjoy a good sleep. Upper beds are less expensive than the lower ones. A private "first class" cabin for two persons is also available. From Suratthani, you can take a ferry ride to Koh Phangan.

Koh Chang , Trat , Thailand

Elephant Riding @ Thailand

Elephants used to be a major form of transport before the rivers and roads were discovered. They are still used these days especially in Thailand's dense forest and broad rivers where it is virtually impassable by other modern modes of transport. One of the best way to explore Thailand's natural wonders and be at one with mother nature is by elephants!


Tourist attractions throughout the country will often have a resident elephant, however serious trekkers and elephant riders will need to go to the northern regions of Thailand for a richer experience.

One can experience elephant riding and arrange for an elephant tour at the many elephant camps around the country. One such example is the Mae Kok Elephant Camp located at a Karen Hill Tribe village on the Mae Kok river bank in Chiang Rai district. Tourists wishing to explore the forest and visit the Karen village can take elephant rides from this camp. Umphang Elephant camp is another such camp in a Karen village. Here, Hill-tribe folk earn their living raising around forty elephants for trekking and riding. In Sangkhla Buri, a district on the Thai-Burmese border in Kanchanaburi province, elephants are raised for working purposes. When not working, they are available to visitors to ride in the forest at Sangkhla and by the Noi river.

Sea-Gypsy Village Known to the Thais as Chao-Le, sea gypsies have occupied the area for hundreds of years settling along the coast in stilt-built houses erected in the sea. They are unique in that they mix very little with the general population, speak their language and have their very own supernatural and traditional beliefs and rituals.
Orchid Nursery Farm This farm is for those who like flowers. The Orchid Nursery Farm is located at Long Beach (Pra Ae beach).

From Krabi: Micro-bus: At Thanan Tour opposite City Hotel in Kribi Town servicing 3 times a day taking about 2 hours and will be transported to Koh Lanta Noi by the motor ferry and again to Koh Lanta Yai which is very convenient for tourists who do not prefer to board the public boat.

Public boat: Boarding at Chao Fah Pier in Krabi Town servicing twice a day in the morning and afternoon taking about 2.30 hours. The service starts from November to May each year.

From Trang: Take the mocro-bus of K.K Travel and Tour behind Trang Railway Station taking about 2.30 hours (3-5 times a day)

Flying To Koh Lanta
Krabi Airport is the nearest airport to Koh Lanta. Air Asia, Bangkok Airways and Thai Airways all provide daily flights from Bangkok to Krabi Airport.  Nok Air have unfortunately suspended their flights to Krabi but do fly to Trang Airport. You can book a taxi from Trang Airport to Koh Lanta with us if required.

Floating Market in Thailand

Amphawa Floating Market
Amphawa Floating Market  is an afternoon floating market by the canal near Wat Amphawan Chetiyaram. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, during 12.00 p.m. – 8.00 p.m., the Amphawa Canal is occupied by vendors who pack their boats with food and drinks, such as fried sea mussel, noodles, coffee, O-Liang (iced black coffee), sweets, etc. Visitors can enjoy a cosy atmosphere and music broadcast by the community members, explore the market, have food, and hire a boat to see fireflies at night.

How to get to Samut Songkhram

Car
By Car: From Bangpakaew T-intersection onto the Thonburi - Paktho Road, take Highway No. 35, through Mahachai - Nakluea intersection, at Km. 64, turn right into Muang Samut Songkhram.

Bus
By Bus The Transport Co., Ltd. services Bangkok - Samut Songkhram buses daily from the Southern Bus Terminal on Baromrajajonnani Road. Call at 0-2435-5031 for air-conditioned buses and at 0-2434-5557-8 for non-air conditioned buses.

Train
By Rail : From Wongwianyai Railway Station, there are daily Bangkok - Samut Songkhram trains. Get off at Samut Sakon Province Railway Station, take a boat to Ban Laem Railway Station and get on the train to Samut Songkhram. You can also take a train from Wongwianyai Railway Station, and get off at Mahachai Railway Station and take a bus to Samut Songkhram. Ao Nang , Krabi Thailand

Ao Nang is now at this stage and represents, for many people, an ideal compromise between a pristine but boring destination and a fun but polluted one. The southern half of the beach is not yet bordered by a road, yet the town has a wide enough range of facilities, for example six Italian restaurants, to keep most visitors happily occupied for at least a couple of weeks.

Ao Nang itself has two idyllic, unspoilt beaches, which are lapped by clear, warm water. Other, pristine beaches are located on a number of outlying islands which can be accessed cheaply and quickly from Ao Nang by local longtail boats.  Thai food is abundant in Ao Nang and is available 24 hours a day. Visit a traditional Thai restaurant, eat at a local market or try one of the many street vendors, who are based on every street corner.

HOW TO GET THERE?
By plane
Krabi International Airport is about 40 minutes away by car. As of 2005, the local airport limo monopoly charges a fairly steep 600 baht for a transfer (up to 4 people). Many hotels will arrange a pickup at similar prices on request. Travel time is about half an hour.

Local shuttle buses — really just converted pickup trucks (songthaew) — run from Ao Nang to Krabi (40 baht) and from Krabi to the airport (50 baht). The total trip between Ao Nang and the airport takes little less than 2 hours. To get to Ao Nang from Krabi town you should look for a white songthaew outside the 7-Eleven store.

As of late 2007 there is now a big bus service from the airport to Ao Nang, via Krabi Town, the Krabi ferry terminal and Noppharat Thara beach.


By boat
Rai Leh West and Ton Sai are only 10 minutes away while the less developed Had Yao (Long Beach) is 25 minutes away by long-tail. Boats leave constantly from the east end of the beach and charge a flat 80 baht/person during the day, 100 baht/person at night (after 18:00 hrs). There is no pier so expect to get at least your feet wet, probably more. Long-tail boat from Aonang is available at all seasons but subject to the weather permits. In case of the monsoon season (May - Oct), getting to Railay from Ao Nammao is recommended.

There are also public ferry services to Ko Phi Phi and Ko Lanta (usually twice daily), for which any travel agent will be happy to sell you tickets at around 200 baht/person. During the monsoon season, the ferry runs once day.

Boats from Ko Lanta now arrive at the new jetty, from there take a taxi (350 baht), or local bus to Krabi (50 baht) and then on to Ao Nang (40 baht).

By songthaew
There is a Songthaew(shared pick-up truck / taxi) service to Ao Nang from Krabi town, which runs throughout daylight hours in low season and up to 10PM in high season. The fare is 50 baht and they can be expected every 15-20 minutes. Songthaews are colour coded according to destination so make sure if you are coming to Ao Nang from Krabi you get on a white one.

Get around Ao Nang,
Tuk-tuks in Ao Nang charge a flat 20 baht/person for trips around town. Songthaews also run all across Ao Nang onto the Shell Beach and some all the way to Krabi town, fares from 10 baht up depending on distance.

Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok

Wat Pra Kaew was built to house the Emerald Buddha which was returned to Thailand after Thailand’s the capture of Vientiane in 1778. The Emerald Buddha is the most important representation of the Buddha in Thai Buddhism. To pray before the Emerald Buddha is to make merit, and although this is an important place on any visitor’s itinerary, it is important to recognise that this is a place of worship and should be respected as such.

Notes: You must dress appropriately before guards will permit you to enter the Palace. If you do not have long sleeved shirts/blouses or long trousers or dresses/skirts with you, it is possible to hire cloth at the gates of the Palace. This cloth can be wrapped around you and worn as a 'Sarong' or across your shoulders.

How to get there: The Grand Palace and Wat Pra Kaew are in the Banglamphu area of Bangkok – the ‘Old City’. To get there you can take a taxi, which from the centre of Bangkok will cost about 80 Baht.

Attraction @ HuaHin , Thailand

Hua Hin lies some 200 kiloetres to a three-hour drive southwest of Bangkok. Adding destination to Hua Hin’s coastal setting, is its status as Thailand’s most traditional beach resort. It was here, in the 1902s, that King Rama VII built a summer palace, thus creating a vogue among high society for Hua Hin to become, the present Royal Family continues to reside at Hua Hin for part of the year.

Hua Hin Night Market  
Situated in the Hua Hin centre between the Petchkasem Road and the railway line, the market basically encompasses one street that comes to life from 18:30 onwards, when traders line the street with their stalls selling various apparel, crafts, art, CDs, DVDS and cheap, tasty food – generally what you might expect from a Thai market. This is by no means the best place to shop in Thailand; you will finder a bigger variety of goods in Bangkok or say, Chiang Mai. However, Hua Hin does have a superb selection of seafood restaurants that line the road that hosts the Night Market, drawing a lot of attention from visitors eager to feast on the quality dishes on offer.   


Hua Hin Railway Station
Built during the reign of King Rama VI, and only a short distance from the centre of town, Hua Hin's railway station and adjacent royal waiting room are attractive. The brightly painted wooden buildings that are Thai in concept and design somehow manage to have a 'Victorian' feel to them. Even if you don't arrive at the resort by train, go and have a look.

Beaches:
Pattaya is 147 km. southeast of Bangkok and adjoins the Gulf of Thailand. It is Thailand's premier and most successful beach resort which annually attracts hundreds of thousands of pleasure-seeking visitors from all over the world.

For the past centuries, Pattaya was a small fishing village almost cut off from the outside world. But after its beauty was discovered by the first group of American servicemen from Nakhon Ratchasima in 1961, the sleepy Pattaya gradually became a famous beach resort. Fishermen's huts along the beach were replaced by a full range of accommodations from super deluxe hotels to bungalows and mini-pocket guesthouses. And the quiet powdery golden beaches are frequented by swimmers and sunbathers from various parts of the world.

Pattaya Beach is divided into the north, central and south zones. The 2nd Pattaya Road in North Pattaya highlights Tiffany Show, Alcazar Cabaret and Central Festival Department Store.  Central Pattaya offers many medium-sized hotels, beer bars, a-go-go bars, clothing shops and shopping complexes such as Royal Garden Plaza and Mike Shopping Mall.

South Pattaya, the most bustling area, is also called Walking Street as it is closed for traffic from 19.00 to midnight. The street is crowded with numerous shops ranging from tailor shops, clothing shops, sport equipment shops, jewellery shops and souvenir shops. Bars are densely located here along with restaurants close to the beach.

Phi Phi Island by Speed Boat:
We now a believer in the goodness of speedboats; they're speedy. Having made far too many trips between Phuket and Phi Phi by ferry, I feel qualified to claim that this is the best way to travel between islands - at least until I can afford a helicopter.

With the wind on your face and three throaty engines rocketing you over the water, it's like being in an Italian convertible that floats. Classy.

Guiding tours where the tide is major factor is a bit of an art form. Lucky for me, my guide has been at it for twenty years. His name was swept away in the wind, as is bound to happen when making introductions in a speeding boat.

A little detective work and I discovered he calls himself Holger. A transplant from Germany, he's called Phuket home for 20 years and knows plenty about where we're going and when to be there. Balancing water levels with crowd avoidance - and adding a ridiculous amount of informational titbits - he kept things moving along at a good clip.
