Temple Ayutthaya Temple, Thailand

Visit the Ayutthaya temples on a cultural day trip from Bangkok, it's a highlight of any Thailand visit. The tour to the ancient capital of Siam includes a trip by riverboat, a must-do activity when you're in Bangkok, with close-up views of the temples and historic sites that line the Chao Phraya River.

Ayutthaya is an island at the confluence of three rivers: the Chao Phraya River, the Lopburi River and the Pa Sak River. As the train station is at the east side off the island, most visitors will need to cross the river by ferry boat. Navigating your way around the island is not particularly hard: U Thong Rd is a ring road that circumvents the island completely. Most temple ruins can be found at the northwest of the island, while accommodation and night life is clustered around the northeast. As non-Siamese peoples were not allowed to live inside the city walls, things foreign are found off the island.

Once considered the most spectacular city on Earth, the ruins of the capital of the Kingdom Ayutthaya are now a major tourist attraction easily accessible from Bangkok by car, train, or boat as either a daytrip or overnight excursion.

Samet after oil spill , Region to be tested for a year

More than 560 want compensation after oil spill, minister says

The Pollution Control Department (PCD) will test the quality of seawater and air around Khao Laem Ya-Mu Koh Samet National Park for one year, after the oil leak in the Gulf last week.

More than 560 entrepreneurs and other people affected by the leak have sought compensation so far from Rayong provincial office. Energy Minister Pongsak Ruktapongpisal has said hotels will be first to be compensated.

PTT Global Chemical (PTTGC) has promised to compensate all those affected.

Meanwhile, PTT board chairman Pranpree Bahiddha-Nukara said the group had decided to revise its overall risk management and use this incident as a lesson learned. Each board director has been tasked with drawing up a new risk-management plan that set higher standards for the group.

On July 27, about 50 tonnes of crude oil reportedly leaked from an offshore pipeline owned by the firm. The oil slick reached Koh Samet's Ao Phrao and affected nearby areas.

As of yesterday, PCD director-general Wichien Jungrungruang was convinced that the cleanup mission at Ao Phrao was more than 95 per cent complete.

A film of oil had disappeared from the sea surface. Divers who checked coral reefs at a spot north of Ao Phrao said no coral had died. Around Khao Laem Ya and Ao Phe, seagrass showed no signs of being affected.

However, Wichien said it was too soon to conclude that it was safe for people to use the affected area now.

"To the naked eye the situation may look fine, but we have to conduct further tests to be sure that things are really all right," Wichien said.

He said tests of seawater samples collected from Ao Phrao showed that the seawater did not have any contaminant.

"But we will conduct tests at 18 spots around Koh Samet too and the results will come out by August 13," Wichien said.

Starting from mid-August, the PCD will collect samples from affected beach and sea areas to determine whether they are contaminated with total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

"These tests will continue for one year," he said.

He added that air-quality tests for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) would run around-the-clock until the end of this month.

Tourism and Environment Promotion Association president Sutta Hemasathon said several groups in Rayong were now preparing "Friends Help Friends" activities to help businesses hit hard by the oil spill.

"For example, we will hold the Big Cleaning Day and Seafood Party on all Rayong beaches," he said.

He said the oil spill had hit tourism operators, ferry operators, restaurant owners, fishermen and seafood-related entrepreneurs.

"Sales at my restaurant dropped by more than Bt10,000 from Bt40,000 a day," Nok Kaeo Seafood Shop owner Kanitta Sridongrak said.

On compensation, Pongsak said yesterday that hotels would be the first to be compensated, without having to wait for consideration by a compensation panel.

water test

They were directly hit by the oil spill and it was easiest to estimate their losses, he said.

Compensation for fishermen and others is pending approval by the compensation committee, which is chaired by the Rayong governor.

Pongsak said that a forensic team found a trace of exterior damage in the offshore pipeline's flexible hose, suggesting human error was to blame.

He also insisted that the volume of the oil leak was only 50,000 litres, based on a calculation of the hose’s diameter and pressure.

"Some based their estimate on the volume of dispersant used. At 33,000 litres, the dispersant can dissolve over 180,000 litres of oil.

Oil spill hits beach at Koh Samet island

PTT ... and at least 300 navy soldiers are cleaning up the damagecaused by an oil slickthat has pollutedAo Phrao beach on Samet island.

...on Monday (29 July 2013)  the oil entered the bayand washed up on the  beach at Ao Phrao, on the western part of the island, on Sunday night.

The oil slickhas affected the entirebeach of the small bay PTT personnel.. and navy ... deployed to the area on Sunday were cleaning it up. It was hoped the clean-upwould be complete later on Monday...

Clean-up crews were also working to further containthe main slickand prevent it moving to Phae beach on the mainlandof Rayong's Phae district, as the wind is moving it in that direction...

... the oil slickthat washed up on the island is about one-tenth of the 50,000 litres of oil that leaked into the sea on Saturday off the eastern coast at the Map Ta Phut industrial estatein the province.

Oil spill clean-upat Ao Phrao beach at Koh Samet.

A Samet park official said tourists were evacuated from Ao Phrao. Other beaches on the island were unaffected...The oil slickwas caused by a leak in a PTT pipelinecarrying crudeoil being unloaded by an offshoretankerto its refineryabout 6.50am on Saturday.

The leak location is about 20 kilometres southeast of the Map Ta Phut industrial estate..the leak occurred in the pipelineat a single point mooring A single point mooringis an offshore-anchored buoyused as a deviceto transferoil from the sea to a tanker It is attached to the tankerto prevent it from drifting during the transferprocess.

The company said the incidentoccurred as an oil tankertransferred crudeoil via the buoyto supply to the company's oil refineryon the shore

Shortly after the leak, workers rushed to close the valves of the oil pipelineimmediately to stop any further leaks. A 200-metre-long boomwas placed around the floating oil to prevent the oil slickfrom spreading further.

Workers also used oil skimmers to remove the oil and put it in containers on boardthe ship.Four ships were deployed to sprayabout 35,000 litres of oil-spill dispersants to clean up the oil slickon the sea surface..

How to get Full Moon Party , Koh Phangan

TRAIN There is an efficient train service from Bangkok to the South of Thailand (southern line). The overnight sleeper trains are the best way to go. Check the latest prices and schedules via the service link on the website of The State Railway of Thailand. All trains stop in Suratthani, where you will be provided with a connecting bus to the ferry pier. The total trip by train and boat takes about 11 to 16 hours. A boat ticket to Koh Phangan and transport from the train station to the pier is usually included in the 'joint ticket'. If you do not have a joint ticket you can always buy a ticket for the boat at the pier.
BUS Taking a government bus from Bangkok is a good way to get to Koh Phangan. It offers a lot of leg space because it has less seats than the regular tourist buses (which are offered by travel agencies and TAT-agencies). The government bus will continue on the ferry to Koh Phangan so you can leave your luggage on the bus, saving you time and the hassle of changing transport. The government bus leaves from the Southern Bus Terminal in Bangkok, where you must also buy the ticket.

Songkran Festival

Thailand's most celebrated festival is the Songkran Festival. It starts April 13 and lasts between 3 and 10 days, depending on where you are in Thailand. The word Songkran is from the Sanskrit meaning the beginning of a new Solar Year, but nowadays Thailand celebrates the New Year on 31 December.

The Thai people celebrate this festival with water. Everyone gets soaking wet and since it is the hottest season of the year, the custom is quite refreshing. Songkran is a Public Spring Cleaning Day, supported by the religious belief that anything old and useless must be thrown away or it will bring bad luck to the owner.

In Chiangmai, the Songkran procession is held on this day. This is a parade through Chiangmai comprised of Buddha images and attendants on floats, which are accompanied by minstrels and the town's people. The procession begins at Nawarat Bridge on the Mae Ping River and moves the Thapae Gate before approaching its final destination of Wat Prasingh.

In Bangkok,  Khao San Road is most popular for Thai and foreigners. This place will provide water , flour , water gun and more. Songkran Festival has the period 13-16 april each year. What attracts people to play this festival is fun atmosphere , many people and most important is big smile of people.

Don Muang Getting Around
With expressways galore, the best way to get around Don Muang has to be car or taxi. However, the Skytrain (nearest station Mo Chit), and underground (nearest stations Phahalyothin or perhaps Lad Phrao) are both very handy for trips downtown. There is also a train station at the airport, with trains to and from Hualumphong station in the centre of town (near Chinatown). These can be a hassle though: schedules are erratic, trains often delayed.

Samui , Thailand

Koh Samui is the third largest island of Thailand after Phuket and Koh Chang and one of the most popular destinations for travelers. In recent years it developed to a tropical beach resort but still maintained its charm and has everything to offer - from coconut tree fringed beaches to tropical jungles to a vibrant nightlife. Popular beaches are Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut & Maenam.

From Europe to Latin America, from Australia to the USA, very many people now recognise the name of Koh Samui. And for good reason. This beautiful tropical island has been charming its visitors ever since the first tourists arrived in 1971. Those who experience Samui are rewarded with an idyllic tropical retreat with little traffic, white-sand beaches, a sapphire-blue sea, an abundance of tantalising Thai cuisine and an unusually warm and friendly people.

Accommodations range from bungalows and villas to 5 star boutique resorts and are suitable for all budgets. Restaurants of all flavors invite for delicious wining and dining and spas and massage facilities for rejuvenation. Activities include elephant trekking, canoeing, sailing, diving, golfing, fishing, biking and all you can think of. There is also a lot to see, like waterfalls, temples and jungles as well as a butterfly garden, an aquarium and tiger zoo, monkey theatre, snake and crocodile farm and a tropical zoo to name some. Day tours to the neighbor islands of Koh Phangan, Koh Tao and the Angthong Marine National Park are well worth to attend. Direct flights to Samui airport from Bangkok, Singapore and Hongkong as well as ferry services from Suratthani makes Ko Samui easy accessible.

Getting to Koh Samui:
There is the direct flight or bus or train from Bangkok to Koh Samui. By bus to Koh Samui or by train to Surat Thani Province and from Surat Thani Province, there is the ferry transfer to cross over to Koh Samui.

By Air
The most convenient and fastest mode of travel is flying to Koh Samui by air. Bangkok Airways is the only airway running between Bangkok and Koh Samui. There are many flights everyday and there are the promotion flights; one early-bird flight and one late-night flight per day. Please check with Bangkok Airways whether promotion is valid when you book the air ticket. Airline information and air ticket reservation can be available at Bangkok Airways Website www.bangkokair.com

By Bus
If you would like a more economical way to travel, take the VIP bus from the well-known Khao San Road or from the New Southern Bus Terminal at Boromrat Chonnani Road. The VIP buses are more comfortable than the so-called air-conditioned bus. The tickets are easily available in almost every travel agency in Bangkok. Ferry fee is often included in the price. Please confirm it when you buy the bus ticket. Please contact New Southern Bus Terminal at telephone: 02-4345557 or visit http://www.transport.co.th/Eng/HomeEnglish.htm

By Train
from Bangkok to Suratthani Another way to travel is the night train from Hua Lamphong, the Bangkok Railway Station to Suratthani. The sleeping cars are more comfortable to take a ride in this long-hour journey. It is a little bit more expensive than the bus, but you will enjoy a good sleep. Upper beds are less expensive than the lower ones. A private "first class" cabin for two persons is also available. From Suratthani, you can take a ferry ride to Koh Phangan.

The fastest ferry leaves from Donsak pier on the main land. The ferries are not luxurious in any way, but you will see many of the small surrounding islands if you don't fall asleep. Some Thai guys on some ferries may try to convince you that "their" resort on Koh Samui is great. It can be a blank or a prize in that "lottery". For further details, please call 1690, 02-2237010, 02-2237020 or visit www.railway.co.th

Elephant Riding @ Thailand

Elephants used to be a major form of transport before the rivers and roads were discovered. They are still used these days especially in Thailand's dense forest and broad rivers where it is virtually impassable by other modern modes of transport. One of the best way to explore Thailand's natural wonders and be at one with mother nature is by elephants!

Tourist attractions throughout the country will often have a resident elephant, however serious trekkers and elephant riders will need to go to the northern regions of Thailand for a richer experience.

One can experience elephant riding and arrange for an elephant tour at the many elephant camps around the country. One such example is the Mae Kok Elephant Camp located at a Karen Hill Tribe village on the Mae Kok river bank in Chiang Rai district. Tourists wishing to explore the forest and visit the Karen village can take elephant rides from this camp. Umphang Elephant camp is another such camp in a Karen village. Here, Hill-tribe folk earn their living raising around forty elephants for trekking and riding. In Sangkhla Buri, a district on the Thai-Burmese border in Kanchanaburi province, elephants are raised for working purposes. When not working, they are available to visitors to ride in the forest at Sangkhla and by the Noi river.

Elephant trekking

   1. CHIANG MAI: At Chiang Dao Elephant Camp in Chiang Dao District, elephants are trained to perform for tourists and available for rides in the nearby forest. Mae Taeng Elephant Camp in Mae Taeng District, offers bamboo rafting in addition to elephant-back rides.

CHIANG RAI: Elephant riding is available at Mae Kok Elephant Camp on the bank of Mae Kok. You can take a ride through the surrounding
forest and to nearby Karen hilltribe villages.

   2. KANCHANABURI: An elephant ride through the jungle is popular with visitors to Thong Pha Phum and Sangkhlaburi. A ride can be incorporated into a longer trek featuring mountain biking and rafting.

Ao Nang , Krabi Thailand

Ao Nang is now at this stage and represents, for many people, an ideal compromise between a pristine but boring destination and a fun but polluted one. The southern half of the beach is not yet bordered by a road, yet the town has a wide enough range of facilities, for example six Italian restaurants, to keep most visitors happily occupied for at least a couple of weeks.

Ao Nang itself has two idyllic, unspoilt beaches, which are lapped by clear, warm water. Other, pristine beaches are located on a number of outlying islands which can be accessed cheaply and quickly from Ao Nang by local longtail boats.  Thai food is abundant in Ao Nang and is available 24 hours a day. Visit a traditional Thai restaurant, eat at a local market or try one of the many street vendors, who are based on every street corner.

HOW TO GET THERE?
By plane
Krabi International Airport is about 40 minutes away by car. As of 2005, the local airport limo monopoly charges a fairly steep 600 baht for a transfer (up to 4 people). Many hotels will arrange a pickup at similar prices on request. Travel time is about half an hour.

Local shuttle buses — really just converted pickup trucks (songthaew) — run from Ao Nang to Krabi (40 baht) and from Krabi to the airport (50 baht). The total trip between Ao Nang and the airport takes little less than 2 hours. To get to Ao Nang from Krabi town you should look for a white songthaew outside the 7-Eleven store.

As of late 2007 there is now a big bus service from the airport to Ao Nang, via Krabi Town, the Krabi ferry terminal and Noppharat Thara beach.

By boat
Rai Leh West and Ton Sai are only 10 minutes away while the less developed Had Yao (Long Beach) is 25 minutes away by long-tail. Boats leave constantly from the east end of the beach and charge a flat 80 baht/person during the day, 100 baht/person at night (after 18:00 hrs). There is no pier so expect to get at least your feet wet, probably more. Long-tail boat from Aonang is available at all seasons but subject to the weather permits. In case of the monsoon season (May - Oct), getting to Railay from Ao Nammao is recommended.

There are also public ferry services to Ko Phi Phi and Ko Lanta (usually twice daily), for which any travel agent will be happy to sell you tickets at around 200 baht/person. During the monsoon season, the ferry runs once day.

Boats from Ko Lanta now arrive at the new jetty, from there take a taxi (350 baht), or local bus to Krabi (50 baht) and then on to Ao Nang (40 baht).

By songthaew
There is a Songthaew(shared pick-up truck / taxi) service to Ao Nang from Krabi town, which runs throughout daylight hours in low season and up to 10PM in high season. The fare is 50 baht and they can be expected every 15-20 minutes. Songthaews are colour coded according to destination so make sure if you are coming to Ao Nang from Krabi you get on a white one.

Get around Ao Nang,
Tuk-tuks in Ao Nang charge a flat 20 baht/person for trips around town. Songthaews also run all across Ao Nang onto the Shell Beach and some all the way to Krabi town, fares from 10 baht up depending on distance.

Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok

Wat Pra Kaew was built to house the Emerald Buddha which was returned to Thailand after Thailand’s the capture of Vientiane in 1778. The Emerald Buddha is the most important representation of the Buddha in Thai Buddhism. To pray before the Emerald Buddha is to make merit, and although this is an important place on any visitor’s itinerary, it is important to recognise that this is a place of worship and should be respected as such.

Notes: You must dress appropriately before guards will permit you to enter the Palace. If you do not have long sleeved shirts/blouses or long trousers or dresses/skirts with you, it is possible to hire cloth at the gates of the Palace. This cloth can be wrapped around you and worn as a 'Sarong' or across your shoulders.

How to get there: The Grand Palace and Wat Pra Kaew are in the Banglamphu area of Bangkok – the ‘Old City’. To get there you can take a taxi, which from the centre of Bangkok will cost about 80 Baht.
